ASUS K61IC screen flicker / display corruption

default ASUS K61IC screen flicker / display corruption

I bought my Asus K61IC laptop on December 1, 2009. Recently I began experiencing screen flickering and display corruption. It is most severe when I have the laptop on battery power, but it also occurs when plugged in, albeit less frequently. Sometimes the flicker doesn’t happen at all, and sometimes it happens every second for minutes at a time. A few times the screen went completely black for 15-20 seconds. Also, occasionally there is display corruption in which horizontal and vertical lines appear on the screen while it flickers. My guess is that this is either a GPU specific or general overheating issue or possibly just a shorted cable between the motherboard or dedicated graphics card and the display. I’ve found a similar video detailing this issue with the same laptop here: goo.gl On Amazon this buyer mentions it as well: goo.gl And here on the ASUS forums there is some discussion, apparently flashing the bios to current release doesn’t fix the problem: goo.gl It appears this is not an isolated issue and may be a sign of a hardware fault with the K61IC. I’m going to contant ASUS to RMA it, thank god I have a 24mo warranty. Arghhhh technology!!!!

So every few weeks, I was reconnecting the display cable, until one day I broke the plastic side of the connector when removing the cable. Since then, I meddle with the cable very very sparingly, and mostly just put a coin under the laptop, where the connector is. It pushes the cable in a bit, and flickering stops. Or support the laptop on one leg only when using it as a LAPtop.

And like everyone said, it is very bad on battery, and almost no flickering on AC power.

I have figured it out to be a faulty display connector. I bought this model in Oct or Nov 2009, and the flickering thing started after 8-9 months. Didnt claim warranty because I was in a different country and really needed the computer. When the flickering got really bad, I opened the case, reconnected all the connectors and viola, The flickering was gone. Although it came back after a few weeks. (contd….)

Thanks a lot for uploading this video and posting all the FAQ in the description and comments. I have a Asus K61IC and it’s been about a year and sometimes very rare I would of gotten a blue screen but all my hardware tested fine, RAM, HDD, CPU and would not overheat. But eventually this started to happen, but only on battery power. The GPU is running pretty hot 57 degrees Celsius at idle, I’ll pop it open and see what I can do with some AS5. When I plug the power adapter in it goes away though.

I’ve got some decent thermal paste around, maybe I’ll give it a shot. That said, I’m not sure how this could be a heat problem since the display corruption only occurs on battery power, when the laptop is supposedly running cooler (lower lcd brightness, less power to the processor, etc). Either way, thanks for chiming in. When I get some time to give it a shot I’ll post back. All previous attempts at a fix (bios upgrade, power4gear, etc) haven’t worked in the long run.

It’s not drivers, and you don’t need to replace anything. I had the same issue with my K61IC, fixed it tonight. Sorry, didn’t take a video or pics. The issue is that the thermal contact paste that is installed at the factory between the heat pipe/sink and the GPU is utter crap. You need to take the back cover off your computer, remove the main fan / heat pipe assembly, clean the CPU and GPU, and apply good thermal paste like Arctic Silver 5 or the like.

I have the same problem, and finally it became worse and gave me a display with negative colours with very low brightness. I need to travel a long distance to repair center and with my working schedule, I cant do it. I finally opened laptop back cover and found nothing could get my screen back. So i opened display and found a small preset in display is not functioning well. I made some adjustments and got screen to normal colours. I dont have any flicking yet (for two months). Sell this crap

Been having the same problem, though it didnt start happening to me until after putting ubuntu on; so I thought it was a driver issue. Put Win7 back on the laptop and it flickered even more. Updating the bios to 210 seems to have fixed it.

Same laptop, same problem, found solution here: [mhightech.blogspot.com/2011/02/here-is-way-to-solve-asus-k61ic-screen]

Dust on hardware! Remove back, blow and away you go!! :)

Have previously tried reformatting, re-installing drivers and software, taking battery out etc etc never fixed the problem, solution above worked.

See SchoolSarge’s comment on this vid for possible fix. I got in contact with Asus (Spain) on the phone a few times. They sent me the most recent bios and told me that I had to flash it before I could even bother trying to RMA it. So, I flashed it with bios 210 and it seemed to fix the problem… for a day. The flickering came back though, but now it only happens while on battery. When it is plugged in I have had zero screen flicker since flashing the bios.

I used to get something similar on my N53JG when I switched it out of battery mode to normal mode. Constant screen flickering and nothing in software would fix it, but a reboot would always resolve it.

Ever since I disabled “Battery saving desktop” in Power4Gear it hasn’t happened.

I have a problem (Mobo: MSi 870-G45, Palit GTX460 768mb, 4GB DDR3, 500 Watts PSU) When I’m playing games, the screen keeps freezing as if the color changed from 32bit to 16bit. It’s either that or it freezes with small bits of flickering rainbow colors and shut down. Windows keep saying that it crashed and recovered, but most of the time it freezes up and required hard restart. I have latest drivers. Anyone help please?
