BlackBerry Messenger adds free phone calls – but there’s a catch

BlackBerry Messenger adds free phone calls but there’s a catch
Research In Motion is down, but definitely not out. The company is expected to unveil its brand new BlackBerry 10 phones in January, but that’s not all. Today, it’s started rolling out free phone calls within BlackBerry Messenger to all your mates on the BBM chat app, wherever they are in the world, so you can chat without racking up huge bills. There’s just one catch.

Head on over to the BlackBerry Beta Zone, where you can download early versions of key BlackBerry apps, and you can find a new version of BlackBerry Messenger sporting a feature called BBM Voice, which lets you make free calls to BBM contacts, and even talk and text at the same time.

So what’s the catch? Well, it only works over Wi-Fi: you’ll both need to be connected to a hotspot in order to make or received free calls, and a little icon will show on the contact list when that’s the case. Day to day, that may not be all that helpful, but it’s a handy way of staying in touch when travelling at the very least.

BBM Voice for BlackBerry Messenger is available now for phones running BlackBerry 6 or up – if you’re rocking an older OS 5 phone (Think 2009), don’t worry, as RIM says you’ll be getting support for the service soon too.
