Yesterday’s agreement between Myspace and the FTC settled charges that the social network misled consumers by sharing their personal information with advertisers.

In a statement, Ioana Rusu, Privacy Counsel for Consumers Union, the advocacy arm of Consumer Reports, praised the settlement:

Myspace told its users that their personal information would not be shared with other parties outside the site in a way that would individually identify users. But in reality, the website allowed access to a lot of user information in ways that enabled advertisers to identify them, without first telling users about that and asking their permission—as promised by Myspace’s privacy policy. We think companies should stand by their privacy promises, and we commend the FTC for making sure that happens. Incidents such as these show, yet again, that the U.S. needs comprehensive legislation that would set out some common sense rules of the road on privacy, and that is a goal Consumers Union continues to work towards and support.

The FTC’s settlement with Myspace bars the company from future privacy misrepresentations, requires it to implement a comprehensive privacy program, and calls for independent privacy assessments for the next 20 years. The FTC imposed similar conditions on Google, in connection with its launch of Google Buzz, and Facebook in recent months, settling allegations that both had engaged in “deceptive acts” in relation to consumers.

That the FTC has now charged three social networks with breaking their privacy promises to consumers shows that the sort of collection and potential disclosure of sensitive personal information described in our current report, Facebook and your privacy, should be of concern to users of all social networks.
