Facebook Messenger, the social network’s mobile chat app, has been out for some time, but it’s just given the Android version an interesting twist: you no longer need to be a Facebook member to use it. If we didn’t know any better, we’d say it’s getting ready to take on the likes of BlackBerry Messenger and WhatsApp at their own game.

Right now, Facebook Messenger requires you to sign up for a Facebook account – and though popular, not everyone uses it, or wants it on their phone. But starting today on Android, you can use Facebook Messenger by simply signing up with just your name and phone number, meaning you can chat for free without any of the Facebook noise and advertising from your mates.

How to turn any phone into a smartphone

The change, which rolls out today, also points to Facebook’s ambitions on mobile. It clearly wants to take on the big guns of instant messaging on mobile: BlackBerry Messenger and WhatsApp, which both rely on the convenience and stickiness of having an account tied to your phone number and nothing more.

We wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Facebook Messenger receive a similar update on iOS very soon, and roll out on other platforms, like Nokia’s low-power S40 phones, very soon. Is this what you’ve been waiting for from Facebook? Let’s hear your thoughts in the comments below.
