D. Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos I9082 Review

With the budget market flooding the stores with 5.0-inch display equipped smartphones, it was time for the big players to stand up and take notice. The first one, which was rather inevitable, is Samsung. With the recent launch of the Galaxy Grand aka Grand Duos, Samsung has once again decided to tap into the mid-range smartphone segment that it seem to have neglected for a while. We were on hand at the launch and had the opportunity to check out the new smartphone for a bit; here’s what we think of the Galaxy Grand.

DESIGN

We can’t really say that the design is truly boring, but it is nevertheless a lazy attempt on Samsung’s part to simply continue with an existing design, albeit one that worked for it, and incorporate it into yet another model. To be succinct, it looks like the Galaxy Note II. One might go as far as to call it a “Lite” edition of the Note II. The Grand, it would seem, has been designed to entice those users who want the Galaxy Note II, but can’t afford it. Does it deliver on this? Most certainly! Telling them apart is not easy.

The display is smaller than the Note II’s at 5.0-inches with a much lower resolution of 480 x 800 pixels. While this might seem like a deal breaker, from what we saw, you’ll have to be a real sticker for perfection to make an issue out of this. There is a visible difference between the two displays, naturally, and the Note II’s superior Super AMOLED display is much richer in terms of colour and legibility in brighter conditions. We’ll have to put the Grand’s display to test when it’s in for review.

The handset, like it’s brethren that came before, is a slender device that’s a little smaller and narrower, but a little thicker than the Note II. The volume rocker is on the left and the power/sleep button is on the right. A micro USB port is at the bottom and handsfree is located at the top. It’s a simple and uncomplicated design, but that doesn’t necessarily translate to exciting.

Under the rear panel is the 2100mAh battery and a set of SIM card slots. Unlike most dual-SIM handsets, these ports are placed on either side of the battery – SIM 1 is located above the battery and SIM 2 below. A microSD card slot (not hot-swap, unfortunately) is placed just below the battery. The Grand will support 64GB memory cards, allowing you to seriously up your storage space over and above the 8GB of internal memory. An 8MP camera with an LED flash is strapped to the rear.

BOX CONTENTS AND HARDWARE

In the Box of the Galaxy Grand you will find the standard set of things along with a Samsung flip cover for the Samsung Galaxy Grand, which makes the phone resemble the Galaxy Note 2.

The hardware on the Galaxy Grand has been of controversy since the day the phone was announced. Sporting a pesky 800 x 480 WVGA 5 inch display the Galaxy Grand was deemed as an underdog with a lowly display. On the inside as well was an unannounced dual core chipset and a GPU of no ranking. Which we later found out was a Broadcom chipset with a dual core 1.2 GHz cpu and Broadcom GPU.

MEDIA

Although the screen’s resolution might not be at par with even the much lower priced Micromax Canvas HD, watching full HD videos was an enjoyable experience. Videos appeared crisp and ran smoothly without a hint of framing of any kind. The native player will support quite a few existing codecs for drag and drop playback. We didn’t get a chance to test the handset’s audio capability, but it’s rarely an issue with Samsung phones. Of course, we’ll be able to speak in more detail about this when we receive the test device. The Grand also comes with an FM radio app.

INTERFACE

The display is a standard TFT LCD, but a good one, so the viewing angles and colour reproduction is very good. The phone runs Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean along with TouchWiz and the two seem to get along just fine. The UI is fluid just like it is on the Note II, all the new features introduced in it and the S III – Multi-window, Pop-up play, Smart Stay, S Voice and a whole fleet of motion based gestures – are present here.

The fluidity of the interface can be attributed to the spiffy ARM Coretex-A9 MPCore SoC under the hood. This consists of a dual-core CPU running at 1.2GHz each along with 1GB of RAM. The SoC also has support for NEON video decoding extensions and ARM TrustZone technology, amongst others. The GPU is not the typical Adreno or Mali chipset but is a Broadcom Video Core IV. Thanks to the low resolution screen, this GPU manages to pump out very similar performance to the GPU in the Note II. NenaMark 2 benchmark recorded a similar 58FPS and this is also reflected in actual games. For instance, Temple Run 2 and Need for Speed: Most Wanted run smoothly without any issues.

Much to the surprise of many, the display on the Galaxy Grand is quite nice, even though its a WVGA display with a 187 ppi screen, which in comparison to their other devices is around half value. The display is also an LCD Capacitive touchscreen with 16M colors, and not an AMOLED display.

Outdoor visibility is okay, where as indoors you really cant tell if the screen is that poor. Most tasks are not a bother on the display and text is fairly clear to read even when browsing websites. Watching videos will also not be affected while on this display and somehow Samsung has managed to keep pixellation at a low. You  do however feel the grunt of the display while playing games, especially heavy games including NOVA 3, yes it does play that.

CONNECTIVITY OPTIONS

The only thing lacking in this device was NFC. Other than that, the Grand is loaded with all kinds of connectivity features from Wi-Fi with hotspot creation to 3G (Dual Band), EDGE, GPS with A-GPS support and GLONASS, Bluetooth 4.0 with A2DP and EDR and USB 2.0.

CAMERA

The Galaxy Grand seems to have the same sensor we had in the Galaxy S II. The 8MP sensor is accompanied by an LED flash and is assisted by the multitude of tweaking options we saw in the Note II and the S III. Burst mode has been left out though, possibly due to the lack of processing power. Outdoor shots come out really well with good detail and accurate colour capture. Indoors is also pretty good with very little noise creeping in. The Grand manages macros very well, too, with a good helping of depth of field. Video recording maxes out at 1080p and you have the option of adding filers as well.

The front-facing camera is strictly average in terms of quality and the video recording mazes out at 480p.

BATTERY

Powered by a 2100 mAh battery, we had initially hoped to get a full days usage with the Grand and that is exactly what we got. Some people are complaining of the battery life issues on their new phones, but we were quite happy with the battery performance on our unit.

Talk time : 4 – 5 hours

Internet : 5-6 hours

Music : 10 Hours +

Video :  3-4 Hours

Average battery life : 1 Day +

CONCLUSION

The Samsung Galaxy Grand seems to really deliver a good package to the Philippine consumer. The phone is a good performer and matches up in looks, along with its nifty software features, including Jelly Bean , Touchwiz, Samsung Apps, and UI elements like Multiscreen push it way ahead in the competition.

While there are many domestic brands available and many products with somewhat better sounding specs headed for the market, we feel that the best bet for a dual-sim phablet at present is the Grand Duos. The Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos offers stability, a known Android UI, latest softwares and design to go along with it. Samsung might have actually killed its own market because, an S3 buyer will be quite happy with the Grand as well.

The Samsung Galaxy Grand is priced at PhP 16,490, which makes it a very good buy, not only because of its dual-SIM feature but because of its overall performance and functionality. The Grand offers much better value as compared to the HTC Desire SV and is by far the best all-rounder you can buy right now at this price point. The low resolution screen and the fact that it’s a bit heavy and chunky are the only things going against it, but they are in no way deal-breakers. If you can make peace with that, then you’ll love the Grand. It has very good media capabilities, good battery life, dual-SIM functionality, a good camera with full HD recording along with most of the features of the Note II, like split-screen mode, and a good build quality.

Dinesh

Thanks for ur reply panta. If u justify me few reasons for going on GRAND, then it will be better to decide.

Pankaj

I am Owner of Galaxy Grand

I found hardly anycomplaints regarding this fone.

It’s really depends on Your usability..

Which standard Phone is clubbing Dual SIM, 8MPback, 2MP front, 8GB internal Mem (4 GB for Apps), Slick design,multi-window feature, latest Android (at least in India), 50 GB dropbox space free , Vodafone 2 months 3g Free (2GB/m) in Just Rs.21.5 K ???

None other than This 1.

Micromax will launch Canvas-3 in next mnth .. with almost equvalent feature.. in 16 K … which may get hangged while playing biig sized games due to 4GB internal (2GB for APPS).

It depends on your usage.

Angelina

Can plz smbody tell me, should i go for iphone 4s or for new launched samsung galaxy grand?

Dinesh

I need to buy a dual sim Phone and this is my first smart phone. But i’m confused with Desire SV and Samsung galaxy grand I9082. Please suggest me on better option..

Prabhu1987

Im a big fan of samsung mobiles.

people who fed up with using galaxy s duos,

pls wait for few more months to get a good smart phone with dual sim feature. I personally will not go with this Grand. I make myself to get a mob with atleast (1gb ram, quadcore processor, 720 p res, 4.5 to 5inch) after using the s duos.

I was so eager to get this GRAND wen i came to know, but beleive me the demo piece in the shop itself started giving slow response not as like s duos but atleast half of that. eventhough it shows 804 mb as a total ram space its easily getting filled.

I easily figured out the issue while i test the Grand, because i too own the worst galaxy s duos.

a) install some apps like fb, whats app, viber, imo which will be continuously using ur data and always ur data network should be turned on.(2G or 3G or wifi)

b) Now open messages, contacts, phone, settings & gallery default apps of mob.

c) open one of the browser either default one or opera

d) If all the above said are present in the list of task manager, now its a time to open ur temple run or subway surf or any hd game like dead trigger etc.

People who says Grand gives performance, Check now and post ur geniune review.

The only best thing is its a 5inch mobile with a good design. we all know how the galaxy s duos started firing in market after the release. But we all know about the quality of the product after 3 months. So, jus wait…!

Venky

I want to buy this phone but im confuse the real internal memory is only 4gb,Maybe if you use it and you have to download more HD games might be hanged same like s duos is hard to use texting…

dildar

wow…amazing zero lag, zero pixelation on the display,no hanging issue superb color reproduction and clearity, all hd games are runing smothly…guyz frst of all galaxy grand take on ur hand then feel the magic of this phablet..its realy best dual sim smart of the world..!

Suraj

I have no idae what the fuss is all about this Phone.

I am using this handset for the past 2 weeks and i’m completly satisfied with its performance.

Performance: Performance of the phone is commendable. I can easily multitask without any issues. It does not hang while i’m multitasking or using it casually.

Gaming: I have installed NFS most wanted and Deadtrigger and a bunch of other games such as temple run2,pitfall etc and all of them are playing with absolutely no issues. No Lags. NONE!

Camera: I read someone say that camera quality is bad. WTF? My bro has samsung s3 and belive me, grand’s camera is as good as s3 if not more. I think the colour reproduction in grand is better than s3. Its Awesome. Able to record 1080P videos. No issues. If you are facing camera issues than it must be with your phone.

Music: It has got 7.1 virtual surround sound and sounds awesome. Need I say more?

Battery: I keep 3g on throughout the day and ill use the phone moderately. I still get about 60-70% left after 12 hours. Thats good enough for me.

Connectivity: No issues with call reception. Sound is crystal clear. WIFI signal is slightly low when compared to s3 but i still get good speed so its ok.

SmartFeatures: It has all fancy smart features of s3. I found to be really cool. Those small things matter when you use the phone.

Display: Display is not that great but its clear without any pixelation. If you don’t fret about the HD clarity in the display, than it will fine i guess. Personally, its good enough for me.

If some of you are facing issues w.r.t to above details, than its probably some issue with you phones. Get the s/w tested. I will rate this phone a solid 8/10. Grand is trully GRAND!. Cheers!

Few facts about galaxy grand

Hi,

I don’t own this phone but writing this to tell a few facts about a grand.

First thing I want to ask is how everyone was able to review even without using it.

I am not saying it is a bad phone but please be cautious before buying this phone and read the below facts about this phone that I know which not even Samsung is not saying it.

Display: WVGA resolution. This is the same resolution as on Galaxy S2. But this phone has 5 inches versus 4.3 on S2.

Due to same resolution on large screen the display wont be sharp. Quality will be definitely less compared to 2 year old S2.

This is not Super AMOLED. This phone has just LCD display. Quality of LCD display will be very bad. Under sunlight Super AMOLED is not good but good in indoor usage.

LCD will be worse in both sunlight and indoor usage.

Processor: All Samsung is saying this phone has 1.2 Ghz dual core. In S2 it has its own popular exynos processor.

Grand has broadcomm processor. This is probably the first phone with this processor. I have never seen a phone with broadcomm processor. I am not saying its bad but we don’t know until its reviewed.

The reason for using that processor must be cheap price. Otherwise why would Samsung use other companies processor instead of using its own processor.

Two most important specs of any phone is processor and display. These two things are bad compared to 2 year old galaxy s2.

The only reason this phone got attention of people is because of its screen size (5 inches).

So be careful and think a lot before buying.

I am going to rate this phone 2 stars because Samsung is hiding the facts about display and processor.

Sucks!!

Hey guys,Even if you are new to the smartphone segment and want to buy a new phone,Dont’t buy this one..Just think of what all phones are available at this time.It has got good looks, good camera, but other than that??Nothing,Plainly nothing!!Just go for Micromax A116 HD.Samsung released this phone only in India just to compete with overgrowing Micromax..Micromax A116 Canvas HD!!Just look at its specs..It has got a cortex A7 1.2 GHZ Processor compared to 1.2Ghz of this one..And about the display,This has got a WVGA display whereas the A116 got a stunning HD display(1280*720).The Canvas HD is also RS15000 only..Micromax is getting better and better..Think twice before buying anything cause the investment is large and you must never regret in future. If you are skeptical,Just go,Google Micromax a116 vs Samsung galaxy grand..You’ll come to know..If you find my review useful,Vote it high and make it stay on top so that others too find it icon smile Samsung Galaxy Grand I9082 Price in the Philippines: Review, Videos, Benchmark Test Result, Features and Full Specifications

GRAND Phone with Tablet Experience

Got my GRAND delivered on saturday 2nd Feb, was not expecting the delivery till end of this week, so was pleasantly surprised by Flipkart. I bought it on EMI, with no extra charges.

Had taken lot of time and comparisons before I finally made a decision to buy this phone for my wife. I had earlier booked Note II from Indiatimes but cancelled it as I didn’t got the delivery on time and meanwhile GRAND launch was announced.

First Impression in Hand:

1. Looks pretty much like Note II, marginally smaller.

2. Screen / Display looks much sharper then my expectation (Though display is weak)

3. Profile is devoid of any edges, weight seemed appropriate for long use.

Advantages of GRAND:

1. 1.2 GHz Dual core + 1 GB is decent enough for most of popular gaming (Tried all versions of Angry Birds, Temple Run 2, Beach Buggy, email, FB, whatapp etc) and runs smooth with multiple applications running in parallel. There might be minor lag

2. Samsung software customizations, hardware sensors (I guess some 10+ sensors are inbuilt) do lot of magic for you and keeps you engaged (I read somewhere that features are same as Note II with trimmed hardware).

3. 5 Inch display is bright, gives you decent readeablility and mobility, I did not notice any pixelation of any form and viewing angles are ok.

4. Most IMP : Call Voice Quality very good and eliminates noice around, dialling and in call management is good.

5. Speaker output is loud, littlie bit on shrilly on high volume, Ear Phones are good but built quality is average.

6. Android JellyBeans is fast and moment you login with your GMail account you get instane access to all your content on Google Drive, Google+.

Cons:

1. Battery should have been better, Note II’s 3100 Mh was the best fit. 2100 Mh drains in 4-5 hours with above average use in downloading, gaming, texting (Deducting 1 Star from the rating for same).

2. Flip Cover is looks fine but not a magnetic cover to switch off / on the display automatically when closed / open.

3. Price should have been around 17k or 18k max to compete with other lower brands and make it really pocketable (Financially icon smile Samsung Galaxy Grand I9082 Price in the Philippines: Review, Videos, Benchmark Test Result, Features and Full Specifications )

I would definitely recommed this phone, until someone has a tight budget, else should go for Micromax Canvas HD or Huawai Ascent.

Samsung’s Grand Galaxy Duos!

I’ve purchased this handset from the Samsung Store after considerable research on online forums and user-review sites. To start with, the advantages of this handset are :-

- Very good resolution display : I’ve played HD videos on this screen and I must say, picture quality is impressive! It’s not as bad as it is made out to be, by some “learned” users, when compared to AMOLED screens on higher end Samsung models.

- 5″ Display is pleasing on the eyes : good clarity and colour rendition.

- Voice/call clarity is very good, even in extremely crowded, noisy areas. Smart dual SIM works like a charm – calls received on both numbers, even with active data connection.

- Very fast : absolutely no lag whatsoever, even with multiple applications running simultaneously. However, I don’t play graphics-intensive games, so can’t comment on that aspect.

- Android JellyBean : works smoothly on this device.

- Camera : good quality resolution with HD recording. Flash is quite adequate, considering its a PHONE!

- Good build quality : glossy finish plastics and pearl white colour

- 2MP Front camera : very useful for skype conversations. No video cracking/lag.

- Super fast 3G and browsing : Yes, its true!

- The cool stuff : S-Voice (recognizes Indian accents well), Multi-window, motion commands like tapping the top of the phone to move to the top of a list, calling a displayed contact by holding it to the ear, tilt-zoom etc.

- Battery backup : More than adequate for a full day’s use invloving a fair amount of calling, messaging, internet browsing (3G) and emails. At the end of the day I still had 44% battery backup left.

- Free 2GB/month of 3G data for 2 months on Vodafone.

- In the box accessories are of good quality : charging-cum-USB cable, travel charger and headphone-mic with good audio quality.

Disadvantages :-

- Glossy finish looks nice, but is a fingerprint magnet.

- Comes with complementary flip cover (nice!), but is in white, hence dirt shows up very easily.

- An S-pen would have been a welcome addition.

- A tad overpriced : Rs. 17,000-18,000 range would have been ideal.

Compare with orignals

Everybody is writing micromax canvas a116 HD is better than Grand, complaining about broadcom processor and the resolution. First of all do you really know which processor the micromax is using in their so called canvas HD it’s MEDIATEK and it’s a chinese company whose processors are no-sense in all respect, if they go wrong, they will be gone. Do you know Mediatek is been used in every chinese smartphones which you can buy from any shop or market street at cheaper price. Mediatek is of no use. If they will be providing quadcore in canvas HD god knows how the processor will work. Atleast broadcom is a reputed company and if you are bother about reviewing first the processor before using the phone then why you all not review Mediatek and yes you can review the mediatek dual core as well as quadcore which are available in market.

2nd complain is the resolution..Do you really think you will watch the mobile screen 24 hours a day on your phone and will pull out hairs “this part of sharpness and colors are not good” and compare it with other phones. It’s a phone not a computer or television where resolution is a must”. You will use it your own way internet, calling , texting etc and yes for this purpose the resolution is excellent.

I am not supporting samsung or i am against the micromax. It’s just one thing canvas a116 is not yet released in the market and all have already declared it “EXCELLENT”.

I have not got grand from flipkart, buyed from market but i am happy to have it. Features are awesome, service is good and meet my all expectations which i need it in my phone. I am reducing one star because Samsung may have made the product better by taking their time but above all BINGO.
