‘Silver Flyer’ DIY Steadicam and Canon 7d

A homemade steady cam (DIY Steadicam), idea from defnyung, The Silver Flyer. Step by step instructions, I tried. My first tutorial, it was harder then I imagined. I tried making a steadycam out of pvc, took days, but still failed. Tried the silver flyer idea, took an hour and loved it. Did the video the day i made it, so still new at balancing it. Wrapped the silver flyer with electrical tape, looks great. Music by Mitchell Martinez. READ!! You have to drill a hole on the two 3/4 set screw couplings to insert the 1/4 inch hexbolt, its easier to handle the counter weight. AND for the 3/8 hexbolt, it is (1 and 1/2 inch long) hexbolt. not 2 inches. Sorry. And you need many 3/4 fender washers for counter weight, not 3/8 fender washers. I also used 2 wing nuts to tighten counter weight. I used 16 (3/4 fender washers) for the bottom counter weight, and 5 (3/4 fender washers) for the top. You have to mess around with it. And its pretty heavy. But it works for me. Hope it does for you as well. Hello, do you know “photo SFX art” (search on Google for it)? On their website you will find a good free video showing how to make better photos. It made it easier for Joe to shoot photos that leave you with a jaw-dropping-effect any time you take a look at them. It may help you as well…

I built one of these but I am having nothing but problems in trying to balance it. I’m using a Canon 7D and tried balancing both a 50mm 1.8 and my 18-135mm kit lens and no matter what I do I just can’t get it right. When I get close, then the entire thing starts to rotate one way or the other. I’ve tried offsetting that weight but it always wants to creep right or left. I’m also getting too much of a pendulum movement. Grrrrrr… any suggestions?

Hi, have you tried “Photo SFXart Tricks” (search on Google for it)? On their website you can watch a smart free video showing the way to shoot brilliant photographs. This made it easier for Joe to create photographs that have that jaw-dropping-effect whenever you take a look at them. Perhaps it will help you out too.

Going to my local hardware store tomorrow to get all the parts. This is an awesome build; can’t wait to put mine together with a Giottos MH621 and a 60D. Any additional suggestions/experiences with builds similar to mine?

The weight at the bottom needs to match the weight at the top. Camera/top weight. It helps when you have a quick release plate like the giottos mh621 or similar

The heavier the camera. The more weight you to add. longer hex bolt with more weights. I use two hands. One hand on the pvc pipe. And one to steer the camera. Hope this helps

Thank you! I attached a manfrotto 394 quick release adapter. But realized a giottos mh621 or similar quick release plate works better.

@redsoxrock1112 @redsoxrock1112 – firstly the word is ‘Weird’ not Wierd, but then this is not surprising from someone whose imagination only flows as far as a sports team for their username. The man has spent time and effort producing a beneficial insight into this camera which you have consumed for free. Perhaps you should join me in saying a simple thank you, as I personally find all the reviews helpful and professional.

my brother got this for me about the time that it was released in China and looking at it now, the price is cut in half… Brother got it for 10 000 (EEK) or more (EEK is the currency of Estonia)… it’s a nice camera. The videos you can make look good and sound good. The built in mic worked better than i thought it would be :D Lot’s of cameras and mp3 players have had the mic but alot of them haven’t worked that well
